Pondering Goals

I have been thinking about goals a lot because of working on my own personal goals, helping my friends write theirs, and also currently working on 2 products for clients that have a “Goals” feature that doesn’t get used. Therefore it is evident that some products endeavour to help a User become a better person, and so in being fascinated by it wrote a page to start defining what that can look like from a digital product perspective.

🧠Purpose

To give people a means to become a better version of themselves.

👀 Vision

A piece of digital product where people can; show up every day, know what to do, do it, and be confident that they are working towards an Objective in their personal development.

🤕 Problems

The insights that led to these problems were generated from personal experience, leading a team over the last few years, teaching guitar, and helping others to write goals for their personal development.

  1. As a person who aims to be a better version of myself, I need to work towards effective goals that I have set, but I find it is hard to stick to them. This is because they require small, incremental tasks that demand consistency but do not offer instant gratification or results. Therefore I feel I just set targets that I am never going to reach.

  2. As a person who aims to be a better version of myself, I want to know what I can do today to work towards some objective. But it's hard to make and complete tasks for the following reasons:

    1. When I sit down to work on something I am unmotivated.

    2. I face decision paralysis on what I should be working on and therefore end up doing nothing.

    3. I don’t know the things I don’t know and end up reading a lot about it and not doing it.

    4. It can feel unrelatable because it's tough to visualise a path from small tasks to my objectives.

  3. As a person who knows what I have to do to reach my objectives, I want to be consistent and show up regularly, but it's easy to put off my tasks and eventually forget them because I have no one to keep me accountable. I feel alone in my journey and not able to achieve my goals.

🥅 Goals

  • Chuffed wants to create a piece of Product that results in users writing productive goals so that they can be added to Chuffed's own products and for their clients.

  • Chuffed wants to provide the concept of Goal Management so that Users can relate their tasks to what they want to accomplish.

  • Chuffed wants to understand the process behind going from big Objectives to small Daily Actions so that the underlying principles behind improving the self can be implemented in digital products.

🤔 Hypothesis

If a framework of Objectives ➡️ Goals ➡️ Daily Actions are proven to be effective, then it can be used to build the foundation of principles, methodologies, and knowledge in order to make good UI, UX, and Product Decisions.

Some of the ideas behind the framework are:

  • Objectives should be big, vague, long-term, and overarching.

  • Goals should be specific, measurable, attainable, relatable, and time-based.

  • Daily Actions should be small, easy, habit-forming, and achievable.

  • Goals should not have the action inside them but be comprised of what is to be accomplished and what have/who you are as a result. The idea is that the action can change easily and immediately but the goal stays true. For example, a goal could be: In my mostly sedentary day, I need to get some exercise that involves mobility so that my body is active whilst helping towards lowering my weight. This goal can be achieved by walking for 2 hours a day, but also from 45mins of bike riding or a half-hour run in the park, etc.

  • To reach success is by working on short-term Goals by doing daily actions and therefore building positive habits that eventually lead to achieving long-term objectives.

📖 User Stories

As someone who wants to be a better version of myself, I need to know what to do today so that I can continuously work towards my improvement.

As someone who looking to be active in my personal development, I need to be confident that the goals I have written are effective so that I am motivated by success and can see how my life will improve from achieving it.

As someone who is showing up today to work on personal development, I need to know what to do or know how to create those tasks so I can be productive towards my goals when I am ready to work.

✅ Acceptance Criteria

Given I am shaping my personal development journey when I have my Objectives then I am able to write my Goals.

Given I am shaping my personal development journey when I have my Objectives and Goals then I am able to create my Daily Actions.

Given I have completed the work for all my Objectives using the framework when I collate all my Daily Tasks then I have a routine to follow every day.
